What is Occupational Violence?
Occupational Violence is defined as any incident where a worker is physically attacked or threatened in the workplace or during workplace activities.
🔴 A threat is a statement (verbal), or behaviour that causes a reasonable person to believe they are in danger of being physically attacked.
🔴 A physical attack is the direct or indirect application of force by a person to the body of, or to clothing or equipment worn by, another person where that application creates a risk to health and safety.
REDUCING THE RISK OF VIOLENCE TOWARDS STAFF AT WORK
All businesses, organisations and workplaces must identify, assess and control the risk of workplace violence.
In our managing violence at work training we educate staff the importance of awareness, forward planning and prevention.
🎯 If staff can they should firstly eliminate the opportunity for violent or threatening behaviour in the workplace.
🎯 If that is not possible, the potential for violence should be isolated, managed and minimised.
🎯 Our practical occupational aggression and violence training will enhance staff personal protection, in improving management skills with confrontational behaviour and diffusing aggression which will help minimise the risk of injury or harm to health.
Our de-escalation training and Workplace Aggression & Violence training helps reduce the impact and cost of workplace aggression includes:

Rights of defence
Workers subjected to unacceptable behaviour have the right to withdraw to safety. Employees do not have the right to retaliate physically or verbally. However, if a person is physically assaulted and there is no way out, they can use reasonable force to defend themselves or another person from assault and injury. The force used should only be enough to ward off an attack.
Some key training foundations of de-escalation training
🔴 SAFETY IS ALWAYS FIRST WE TRAIN STAFF DO NOT PUT THEMSELVES AT RISK;
ALWAYS SAFETY FIRST
In all circumstances staff safety is the most important priority followed by others’ safety. If it is safe to do so, help other people if you can. If it is not safe to do so, staff should remove themselves from the aggressive situation and request assistance.
🔴 Do not respond to anger with anger;
🔴 Allow the person to vent feelings in an appropriate manner;
🔴 If possible and safe lead the individual into a secluded area,
as people may need personal space when angry, well away from other individuals;
🔴 Approach the individual with a sense of control, controlled breathing, talking quietly and calmly with confidence;
🔴 If needed send for help and alert other staff
🎯 Avoid any words or actions which may antagonize further
🎯 Maintain personal safety and safety of others
In our practical de-escalation training and Workplace Aggression & Violence training we collaborate with businesses and organisations to managing risks
We train employees to identify precursors or signs of escalation towards aggression.
All businesses must do whatever they can to eliminate or minimise the health and safety risks of workplace violence and aggression so far as is reasonably practicable.
In our training we help provide training guidance.
This process is known as risk management and involves:
• Identifying the hazards
• Assessing the associated risks
• Implementing control measures to eliminate or minimise risks, and
• Regularly reviewing control measures to ensure they remain effective and improve prevention of occupational violence and aggression incidents.
Implement de-escalation training to improve staff safety
🔴 The main reason for conducting training is to prevent future incidents by identifying improvements to controls or ways to reduce the risk.
🔴 It is important to implement the practical training as soon as possible to prevent future reoccurrence of the incidents and minimise the risk to employees’ safety and health.
“In our practical training we train staff to practice proactive responses to aggressive workplace incidents.
It is important that responses to critical incidents are practiced on a regular basis to ensure employees are informed and would know what to do in an emergency situation. Just as emergency evacuation responses are practiced regularly in the workplace, so should responses to occupational violence incidents. We train staff to identify signs of escalation towards aggression or violence. The training enables staff to identify signs of aggression and develop strategies to manage sources of aggression to prevent escalation.”
