How to Minimise the Risk of Date Rape through training and education for women, High School students and university students

DATE RAPE PREVENTION TRAINING AND SELF DEFENCE TRAINING CLASSES, LESSONS, WORKSHOPS, COURSES AND PROGRAMS FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, GIRLS AND WOMEN

The Proactive Science of Preventing Date Rape through Date Rape prevention training through intensive workshops, courses and programs.

WHAT IS DATE RAPE?

Rape by a person with whom the victim has gone on a date.
Force (a person with whom one has gone on a date) to have sexual intercourse against their will.

Date Rape is when someone is forced or coerced to have sexual intercourse with someone else who is considered to be an acquaintance, during or after a voluntary social engagement. This especially refers to a non-consensual sexual activity.

It is especially common in many social nightclub scenes and usually involves the use of alcohol or date rape drugs as a means of coercion or as a chemical restraint. There are several drugs that make another person vulnerable to sexual assault, including rape, which are classified as “date rape drugs.” One potent drug is Rohypnol; this drug is not legally manufactured or approved for use in Australia.

How can women and girls prevent the assault or violence of date rape?

Always choose Your Date Wisely: Pay attention to what you hear and see. A person may have a bad reputation for a reason. When it doubt or you feel uncomfortable or unsafe get out leave, EXTRACT yourself and escape to safety.

🎯Pay Attention to Behaviours: Observe the other person’s behaviour carefully. Be aware of controlling behaviour in your date or relationship.

🔴 This should be a red light signal to stop and get out.

Rape is a crime of power and control. Most rape survivors recall feeling “uncomfortable” about some of their partner’s behaviours including:

❌ Intimidating, controlling stares.

❌ Degrading, disturbing, disrespectful jokes or language.

❌ Refusal to respond to communicated and stated physical limits and boundaries.

❌ Refusal to accept “no” as an answer, whether in a sexual context, sexual behaviour or otherwise.

These are a very common themes in date rape situations.

❌ Insistence on making all of the “important” decisions about the relationship or date.

❌ An unwillingness to interact with you as a person rather than a sexual object.

❌ Extreme jealousy, possessiveness.

❌ Strong belief in sex role stereotypes that are not kind, considerate or respectful.

❌ A history of violent, abusive or aggressive behaviour.

❌ Pay Attention to Attitudes: Examine attitudes about money and power in the relationship. If your partner pays for the date, does it affect your ability to say “no?” Does your date have a sense of sexual entitlement attached to spending money on your relationship? If so, then you may consider paying your own way, or suggesting dates that do not involve money.

❌ Know your limits: and let your date know them right from the start. Your sexual limits are yours alone to define. The first step in preventing sexual assault is to define your limits clearly to yourself and then to act quickly when a date or partner intentionally or unintentionally crosses your stated boundaries.

❌ Don’t get in over your head. If someone pushes you to do something you don’t want to do, you have the right to say no and to leave.

✅ Avoid secluded or isolated places until you know your date better.

✅ Suggest a group or double date. Meet in public places, where there are other people and where you feel comfortable. Think about appropriate places to meet, (not necessarily your room or your date’s; these are the most likely places for acquaintance rapes to occur).

✅ Stay in control. Alcohol is the most common date-rape drug. In fact, alcohol is involved in 75 percent of all sexual assaults reported. Be aware that alcohol and drugs compromise your ability (and your partner’s ability) to make responsible decisions. Avoid alcohol and drugs. If your beverage is out of your sight, even for a few seconds, get a new one. Spiking a beverage with a date rape drug can happen quickly.

✅ Stay Connected: Tell a friend where you are going, especially if you’re going out on a first date or a blind date. Always charge your cell phone and keep it on you.

✅ Speak Up: Be independent and aware on your dates. Be clear about what’s okay for you. Don’t expect your date to read your mind. It is your body, and no one has the right to force you to do anything you don’t want to do. Many people have difficulty confronting coercive behaviour because they have been socialised to be “polite”. If you do not want to be touched, you can say, “Don’t touch me,” or “Stop it, I’m not enjoying this.” Tell your partner, “If you do not respect my wishes right now, I’m leaving” and then do it if your partner won’t listen.

✅ Speak Clearly: Do not give mixed messages. Say “yes” when you mean “yes” and “no” when you mean “no.” Be sure that your words do not conflict with other signals such as eye contact, voice tone, posture or gestures.

✅ Trust your instincts: If you feel uncomfortable, leave. If you feel you are in a dangerous situation, or that you are being pressured, you’re probably right, and you need to respond. Many rape survivors report having had a “bad feeling” about the situation that led to their victimisation. If a situation feels bad or you start to get nervous about your date’s behaviour, confront the person immediately or leave as soon as possible.

✅ Be able to get yourself home, and do not rely on others to “take care” of you. Always carry enough money to take a taxi home.

✅ Make a scene! If you feel pressured, coerced or fearful: protest loudly, leave and go for help. Your best defence is to attract attention to the situation if you feel you are in trouble. In an attempt to be nice or avoid embarrassment, you may be reluctant to yell or run away to escape being attacked. If you are worried about hurting the aggressors’ feelings, remember, the aggressor is attempting to hurt you physically and psychologically.

✅ Practice basic Self Defence. Knowing in advance how you would respond to a physical threat greatly increases your chances of escape. All ages and all levels can learn basic Self Defence and classes are often available through schools and community context.

✅ Challenge sexist attitudes that make rape or date rape acceptable. People often deny the assailant’s responsibility in a rape by blaming the victim. People may do this to convince themselves that only “bad” people are at risk for rape and that as long as they live their lives by certain moral standards, they are safe. The truth is that as long as one person is at risk for rape, everyone is a potential target of violence.

AGKK RAPE PREVENTION TRAINING AND DATE RAPE PREVENTION TRAINING is a workshop, lessons, classes, course or program that is specifically designed to meet the needs of women and girls  including high school students when control methods and assault prevention are required to stop a rape or date rape occurring.

How minimise the Risk of Date Rape through Rape Prevention Training and Self Defence training for women, girls and teenagers especially for high school students and university students.

We teach Self Defence techniques, appropriate tactical responses and Prevention Strategies to stop and reduce Sexual Violence and date rape.

Numerous Australian women, teenagers and girls have experienced date rape. This Self Defence practical training outlines the main issues and prevention techniques underlying date rape.

More than 1 million teenagers are sexually assaulted each year across many developed countries. Nine of ten teenagers who report rape were raped by someone they knew (Koss & Harvey, 1991). Many of these rapes by acquaintances are date rapes. Date rapes are specific types of acquaintance rapes in which the rapist is someone with whom the victim has had a date. While date rape occurs at many ages, the highest proportion occurs among teenagers and young adults.”

WHAT IS DATE RAPE?

The term “rape” has (largely) been replaced in Australian legal terminology with the term “sexual assault”. Sexual assault includes any sexual activity carried out against the will of the victim through the use of violence, coercion or intimidation, even if it did not end in penetration. Sexual assault is a criminal offence.

Date rape is a type of sexual assault where the victim and the offender are in, or have been in, some form of personal social relationship, ranging from a first date to an established relationship.

Date rape may be easily recognised as “rape”, or it may involve coercive sex that has left the victim feeling confused and traumatised.

Victims of date rape often experience emotional and some physical injury. Date rape is not a legal term, and is sometimes referred to as “relationship rape”.

DATE RAPE DRUGS

Drugs have been used to facilitate sexual assault in Australia and abroad. Offenders sometimes

covertly spike their victim’s drink in order to incapacitate them, typically at a party or a bar.

Drugs misused in this way include prescription drugs such as

Flunitrazepam (Rohypnol), as well as illegal drugs such as gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB),a steroid alternative for body-builders (International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) 1999).

Rohypnol is prescribed for insomnia in Australia, and in response to its misuse as a date rape drug, the pharmaceutical company Roche recently changed its formulation.

Its availability and tablet strength have been reduced, and it now releases a bright blue dye in liquid, with the aim of making it more difficult for potential date rape offenders to abuse. However, generic versions of the drug which do not contain blue dye are still available.

THE ROLE OF ALCOHOL IN DATE RAPE

Alcohol is a widely used social stimulant that is sometimes consumed in the hope it will enhance people’s sexual encounters. Research has shown a high correlation between the use of

alcohol and sexual assault, including acquaintance rape.

Alcohol can cloud judgement during a sexual encounter, reducing the ability for the victim to resist unwanted sexual advances, and is sometimes used as an excuse to justify sexually manipulative behaviour.

Schools, teachers and educators at the secondary high school level can play a critical role in date rape prevention by providing date rape prevention workshops and Self Defence training workshops that teach, train and educate students to avoid potentially dangerous situations and how to respond in the event of being in a potentially dangerous situation.

By avoiding troublesome situations and adhering to safety precautions through the date rape training workshops and AGKK Self Defence training courses, programs and classes high school students and university students reduce the likelihood of being victimised or an easy date rape  victim.

We also conduct workshops in Preventing Violence and Promoting Safety in all schools including Primary Schools, High Schools and Higher Education Settings: in a Comprehensive Training Approach that is practical and effective.”

Researchers stresses rules that are helpful in avoiding date rape.

First, sexual limits must be firmly set and, then, clearly communicated with a date. When the need arises to refuse sexual advances, young people need to be definite in the refusal. They should speak firmly and look right at their date. Rules for avoiding troublesome situations include staying away from isolated spots, avoiding driving with a stranger or even with a group that is “supposed” to meet additional people, and staying sober (up to three-fourths of all rapists and victims were using alcohol or other drugs at the time of the rape). Young people should be instructed to listen to their “vibes” by trusting gut level feelings about people and, then, should act on those feelings. Whenever young people have stopped seeing someone that they really don’t like or about whom they don’t feel good, they should avoid troublesome situations with these people. A high number of acquaintance rapes are committed by ex-lovers or ex-boyfriends.

Some additional suggestions for self-protection against date rape include date in group settings or in public places so that a date’s behaviour can be assessed in a safe setting etc

WE PROVIDE RAPE PREVENTION TRAINING, SELF DEFENCE TRAINING FOR WOMEN, HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AND ALL GIRLS ACROSS AUSTRALIA.

IMPORTANT RAPE PREVENTION STRATEGIES AND DATE RAPE PREVENTION TRAINING TO IMPROVE SAFETY AND WELLBEING OF WOMEN AND GIRLS:

🔴 It is always a good idea for women and girls to Screen their dates. Know who you are going out with. This can help prevent women and girls being in the company of someone who might be dangerous.

🔴 Women and girls can check out and investigate a first date or blind date with friends. Take your own car or carry money for a taxi and bring a fully charged cell phone with you. You could take a picture of the person as soon as you meet them. This makes the other person aware that you have evidence of who they are and can be a good deterrent of unsavoury behaviour. Go to public places like a movie, sporting event, or restaurant until you feel ready to move to the next stage in the relationship. Don’t leave a party, concert, game, or other social occasion with someone you just met or don’t know well. Do not become isolated or alone with them.

🔴 Set boundaries women need to be clear with communication boundaries with men.

Communicate your feelings about sex and the way you want to be treated in general clearly to a date or boyfriend – if you feel pressured. Men often claim to have misunderstood a woman’s words and actions (the old “she said no, but she really meant yes” excuse).

If you’re feeling nervous or uneasy, end the date and get out of there as soon as you can.

This also means don’t permit abusive or demeaning language or gestures or physical violence in a dating or long-term relationship.

🔴 Women should Trust their instincts. If you feel uncomfortable or get danger signals from someone you know well or casually-view them the same way you’d view a stranger who causes that feeling and take the same precautions.

🔴 Be careful on much alcohol you drink. Women and girls should be cautious about drinking on a date or at a party. Alcohol and drugs affect your judgment, inhibit your instinctive warning system to impending danger and may critically decrease your ability to defend yourself. Statistics show that most date rapes involve their use.

🎯 Personal responsibility increases personal safety.

🎯 Think safe, Act safe and Be safe

🔴 Stay alert– Women and girls who have a tactical mindset improve their safety. Your preventative actions are important for your sustainable safety.

Be watchful for the so-called date rape drugs at nightclubs, parties or other social functions. They are odourless and flavourless sedatives which can be easily mixed into a drink. Only a few small sips cause unconsciousness. Get your own drinks at parties (even when with people you know). Don’t drink from an open can, a poured glass, a punch bowl, pitcher or tub. You can also buy a cover for the top of your drink that as an insert for a straw.

Don’t leave a drink or can unattended or out of your sight. In bars or clubs, get your drinks directly from the bartender and try not to take your eyes off your glass for too long.

🔴 Women should leave immediately if you feel unsafe. Keep your eyes and ears open for dangerous situations.

If there’s talk of date rape drugs or if people seem excessively high even though they’ve had only a little to drink, leave the party or club immediately and don’t go back!

🔴 Women need to be prepared and should definitely learn from Self Defence techniques and attend Self Defence training to help prevent being raped or sexually assaulted.

If you don’t want to have sex, say so NO loudly and forcefully. Be prepared (by practicing beforehand) to get empowered with you voice and strong body language, yell, attract attention… or even fight someone off and defend yourself if necessary.

Here are a few things women, girls and individuals can do to prevent sexual assault:

🎯 Promote and practice healthy relationships, behaviours and attitudes.

🎯 Intervene to stop disrespectful and problematic behaviour.

🔴 Stop a stalker. If you’re being stalked or harassed by someone you know or had a prior relationship with tell them to stop and if needed get some advice from the Police.

Remember no means NO.

The Bottom Line is No Means No to unwanted sex.

Sexual Assault Awareness Training and Rape Prevention Training and Self Defence Training are important

Most self-protective actions significantly reduce the risk that a rape will be completed. In particular, certain actions reduce the risk of rape more than 80 percent compared to non-resistance. The most effective actions, according to victims, are attacking or struggling against their attacker, running away, and verbally warning the attacker.

Rape Awareness Education and Prevention Efforts and Self Defence.

Some more important tips to stop sexual assaults and prevent rape or date rape.

There are also numerous actions and measures individuals can take for preventative measures in various settings where sexual assaults often occur, such as parties.

🔴 When partying or spending time out in public, stick with your friends.

🔴 Hold onto your drink—even when you go to the restroom.

🔴 Don’t share drinks and don’t accept a drink from someone unless you watch the bartender pour it.

🔴 Always keep your cell phone charged and on your person.

🔴 Make sure you have arranged a ride home or plan to walk home with a friend or roommate.

🔴 When on a date or dealing with someone, set clear limits and be firm. Do not give mixed messages. “Yes” means yes and “no” means no. Be sure that your words do not conflict other signals such as eye contact or gestures.

🔴 Be confident with your body language, independent and aware.

🔴 Avoid secluded places where you could be vulnerable.

🔴 Attend Self Defence training to improve your confidence and your empowerment to defend yourself.

SOME IMPOARTANT STATISTICS ON RAPE AND DATE RAPE

Are you aware. . . .

That 80 to 85 percent of rape victims know their attackers

That 57 percent of rapes occur on dates

That most rapes occur in the victim’s home rather than in that of the attacker

That the risk of rape is 4 times higher between the ages 16 to 25 than any other age group.

One out of Four women will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime.

80 percent of all rapes are pre-planned.

The term Self-Defence implies that it is a reactionary response to an aggressive action.

Defence – (wait). Protect – (Prevent)

The word “Protect” implies more of a PROACTIVE ACTION instead of a REACTIVE OR RESPONSIVE ACTION. This is why I prefer to use the term “Personal Protection” when describing specific techniques against an attacker instead of self-defence which reflects more of an overall “Preventive Attitude”. For example, a motor cycle rider “protects” the head from injury–it does not “defend” the head in the event of a fall.

Act on your “gut feeling.” Confront your suspicions immediately. Do not wait for things to improve or rely on someone else’s help. Take charge of yourself if you suspect a situation is developing. Do not concern yourself with seeming impolite or becoming embarrassed. Better that than remaining quiet in a bad predicament.

KEYS TO SURVIVAL TO PREVENT BEING RAPED

1. RECOGNISE 2. ANALYSE 3.CAPITALISE

PLAN

THINK things through. Plan ahead. Even Mother Teresa had only 24 hours in a day. We make time for things that are important. Set priorities. You are more prone to misfortune such as sickness, accident, etc. when you are in a hurry or are feeling rushed. Develop the habit of making a backup plan. Should the need arise, you will be prepared. Clearly define your problems and a set method of solving them. Make it a way of life to do all things the most efficient, economical way. This saves time and aggravation both yours and someone else’s.

PREPARE

LEARN about yourself. Know what you will and will not do. Have an idea what your body can and cannot do. Make rules and stick to them. Challenge yourself to learn and to do new things. By learning more about how the world works, you lesson the need to be dependent on others for their help. You become a more competent, and complete person. However, at certain times you will need to learn from others.

PERFORM

DO your best at all times. It matters. It is another means of developing self-discipline. Your best technique is the one that you practice the most. Practice DOES NOT make perfect. Only PERFECT PRACTICE makes perfect. Don’t expect perfection but always strive for improvement. The idea is to go through life DOING not undoing and redoing. You want to ACT not merely react. All things being equal, if you and I have the same speed, and I move first, you will not be able to catch me, due to you reaction time. Unless you take a shortcut! In the Martial Arts as it is with self-defence the plan is to take that shortcut and prepare your body to perform faster than your opponent will think!

Very few of us can say that we or our friends, relatives, or acquaintances have been free of violent crime. In fact recent surveys clearly show that crime is a major concern to most of us.

Fortunately, most of us can learn ways of avoiding attacks which will significantly reduce our chances of being violently confronted. Strategies which keep us out of the way of attacks will be discussed. We use Self Defence moves which can be used to maximise our chances of survival once we are under attack.

PREVENT

ACT in response according to the action taken. Overreacting is a waste of strength and energy. Act with conviction. You must have 100% belief in your attacker’s destruction. Avoidance is an art. Make it harder for trouble to find you. The best defence is not to be there in the first place.

Concentration cultivates focus. Focus is essential for the centred transmission of inherent power, both mental and physical. It is the unifying force between mind and body. The more disciplined the mind, the more responsive the body.

Learn to develop a SAFETY CONSCIOUS ATTITUDE. This is a state of mind in which you believe that you can prevent accidents by putting into ACTION the rules you know. Taking risks relates directly to your attitude about safety. Your emotional state effects the risks that you take. The possibility of suffering harm or loss involving uncertain danger is an element of risk. The greater the probability of hazard, the greater the risk. There is no need to take unnecessary risks. Get the facts, know the risk, play the odds.

5. Do not base his set of values on your own.

6. Do not believe anything he says.

7. Do not beg or plead with a rapist.

1. I will fight for the right to live.

2. I will fight back and I will win.

3. I will use words like “rape” etc. when talking to my assailant.

4. My attacker is of human flesh and blood. He can be broken, He can be beaten.

5. If resistance is life threatening. Stop the immediate action until it is safe to resume fighting.

HEALTH IS NOT LIMITED TO A SOUND BODY BUT RATHER THAT MUST BE COMBINED WITH A HEALTHY MIND.

THE MIND IS YOUR GREATEST WEAPON. IT MUST BE AS POLISHED AS A CEREMONIAL SABRE, AS SHARP AS A BATTLE BLADE.

We should have no intention of harming other people, but we must try to keep out of harm’s way. To protect oneself, one must find a method that will give the weak the power to defend themselves against stronger opponents. In short, among the advantages of Goju Ryu Self Defence these are a means of Self Defence: no weapons are necessary; the old or the sick, men, women and children, are able to apply it; and one can protect themselves effectively even with little natural strength. These points combine to make Goju Kai Karate a form of Self Defence without equal.

As with all Self Defence courses, there is no single, absolute answer to every situation.

Any knowledge gained from this Self-Defence course should be used with discretion and maturity.

Through Self Defence training you will intensify your instincts by being aware of, and acting on, hunches and insights that you would normally ignore.

Information provided is designed to decrease your odds of an encounter and increase your chances of survival.

For those of us living in an urban/city environment or travelling the little known corners of the world, Self Defence is an issue we should all be aware of. It speaks to self-reliance, survival and self-worth. Knowledge of Self Defence is enabling; is also knowing one’s limitations so that one can act appropriately in any given situation.

The good news is that not everyone gets assaulted. But that leaves several questions. For example, how does an assailant choose who to pursue, pick on or physically attack? Another, even more important question is: how can you avoid being chosen? Unfortunately, there is no safety pill or perfect system for self-protection. But research shows that your body signals and the psychology behind them are a strong deterrent to attackers. One of the best ways to resist being selected as a victim is to “project and un-victimlike, confident and vigilant demeanour. Physical appearance or assertive body language may help exclude a woman from potential attack.

Criminals themselves tell us they look for people who are looking down. If a person acts distracted, with behaviour such as brooding, staring at the sidewalk, searching through a purse or a bag, or reading a map, research found what assailants seem to notice is head and eye movement. People with exaggerated or furtive eye movements or sweeping side-to-side head movements which may imply fear, preoccupation, or being off guard, are more likely to be assaulted.

Some, children are taught to sit and stand up straight because that is correct and appropriate behaviour. Slouching or slumping are habits associated with lower status or position in life. Indeed, we call someone a “slouch” when we want to imply that the are awkward, lazy or inept. Likewise, a slumping posture is associated with low energy, poor body co-ordination, and low self-esteem.

MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES

Self Defence for Women

The correct movement response at the precise moment in time must be executed automatically.

The more strategies you use to fight back – strategies such as yelling, running, fighting are more likely to allow you to escape without harm.

METHODS OF PRACTICE

You can reduce your chance of being harmed and assure your survival by practicing the self-defence methods and participating in Goju Kai Karate.

The attacker may grasp the wrists, clothing, neck, or other parts of the body, and one must escape from his/her attempt to grasp, and immediately deliver a counter attack. So the point to remember is the quickness of the counter attack, which is executed almost simultaneously whilst escaping from the attacker’s hold. The techniques for escaping and counter attacking, must be analysed and practised separately at first, but one must try gradually to reach a point where the blocking and attacking can be executed simultaneously.

The objective of martial arts has always been to defend oneself and not to attack others, and in the case of women’s self-defence this is especially true. The comparative weakness of a women in protecting herself from a more powerful opponent must be offset by her quick and especially accurate techniques in attacking the vital points. In order to achieve this, one must practice regularly, otherwise, during emergencies, one might hesitate or become excited and increase the danger instead of avoiding it.

SELF DEFENCE TRAINING FOR WOMEN

Although you cannot increase your height, standing with a straight posture can give you a taller appearance which may deter an attacker.

In addition to an upright posture, you may want to practice projecting power in order to control a potentially threatening situation. Police Officers, for example, are trained to exude an image of power and authority in order to control criminals.

The authority stance is a useful stance – the shoulders squared, the head erect, the jaw muscles tight, the mouth closed and unsmiling, feet planted firmly on the floor and eyes steady.

It is important not to lose your power image when you open your mouth. In general the lower the pitch of your voice, the more power and authority your voice conveys. This is particularly important in Self Defence. A fast, high-pitched voice makes you sound fearful, helpless. Using a firm, deep sounding voice on the other hand, brings you into control.

BODY USAGE IN SELF DEFENCE

Your attacker reads your body language long before you begin your defence. Typically in your defence training, we focus on specific fighting skills. Body usage, or how you hold and manoeuvre your body, contributes to your ability to perform a specific skill such as a kick, block, joint lock, etc., but often we forget how fundamental our body usage is to the effectiveness of the technique.

The fundamental aspects of self-defence such as standing position (natural stance), moving position (the transition between stances), and orientation to others that body usage is most important.

From a psychological point of view, the natural or steady stance is an opportunity to practice projecting power or authority in order to control a potentially threatening situation. Project a un-victim like, confident and vigilant demeanour, in order to discourage attackers from selecting you.

Authority is as much non-verbal as verbal.

Reports confirm that a potential attacker will often “test” you through eye contact. If you show submissiveness by looking down or to the side, you may find yourself mugged. Keep your eyes forward is a sign of attention and intent.

Lower abdomen slightly flexed.

Legs straight without being locked at the knees.

Keeping your hands free and in front of your body conveys readiness on your part because it is clear that you can use your arms and hands to block or strike if necessary.

You should keep your hands and arms close to your body because large gestures can be misinterpreted as insults. Likewise, avoid crossing your arms or shoving your hands into your pockets as these may be considered threatening behaviour.

One should stand calmly, ready to react to any circumstance.
