TESTIMONIAL ARMED ROBBERY TRAINING

“AGKK Armed Robbery training has my highest recommendation.

Bernie is diligent and an experienced educator, who has had first-hand experience in being on the end of an armed robbery. He is able to get the essential key survival points across in how to stay safe in an armed robbery to all staff no matter their experience in our business.

The armed robbery course which is an intensive practical workshop received very positive feedback from all staff.

The armed robbery workshop covered so many key points;

Identifying how to improve security for our business and how many criminals operate

Identifying and applying methods of prevention and reducing the incidence of armed robbery.

Identifying and practicing the behaviours for staff during an armed robbery event.

Explaining the post robbery procedures and the effective reporting methods

Staff self-care after an armed robbery

Bernie made an emphasis on being prepared and giving practical advice that staff can remember.

An excellent communicator, Bernie provided the strategies to establish a more proactive secure environment for our business.

On attending the Armed Robbery Workshop I realised just how unprepared I would have been, had a robbery happened. After completing the course I now feel mentally prepared to handle an armed hold-up.

Personally I found all areas useful, but more the areas of what to do during the armed robbery and how to recover. This was very interesting because we are not usually familiarised in such areas and how to reduce panic during the situation so staff do not escalate the violence of an armed robbery.

Myself and the other staff feel more confident and informed in handling an armed robbery situation more safely.

Well worth the time and investment.”

Adam Stewart, Palm Beach Hotel

ROBBERY TRAINING AND ARMED HOLD UP TRAINING FOR STAFF

KEY SKILLS TRAINING FOR STAFF IN PREPARATION FOR AN ARMED ROBBERY

In our staff robbery training staff should follow the steps listed below during an armed hold-up or robbery.

🔴 STAFF STAND STILL

🔴 Identify the situation and dangers

🔴 Staff keep their hands where they can be seen and do not make any sudden or quick moves.

🔴 Staff stand slightly off centre to the robber. (A submissive position.)

The telephone must not be immediately used.

🔴 STAFF OBEY THE ROBBER’S INSTRUCTIONS

Staff do exactly what they are told.

🔴 Allow the robbers to leave.

The sooner they leave the safer staff are.

STAFF SHOULD REMAIN CALM AND QUIET DURING AN ARMED ROBBERY

🔴 Staff speak only when spoken to.

(Avoid shouting or provoking the robbers).

🔴 Employees should be submissive and avoid drawing attention to themselves during an armed robbery

🔴 Staff should avoid staring at the robber(s) and/or making direct eye contact during an armed robbery

DURING AN ARMED ROBBERY STAFF OBSERVE, IF YOU CAN DO SO SAFELY

🔴 Make a mental note and identifying the robber’s appearance including hair, colour, height, weight, accent, clothing, race, age and type of weapon.

🔴 Look for identifying characteristics including scars, tattoos and speech patterns.

After the robbery write down the license number and the make, model, colour and year of the get-away vehicle.

STAFF SHOULD STAY OUT OF THE DANGER AREA DURING AN ARMED ROBBERY

The robber(s) are in control – Do not try to overpower them.

During the hold-up, do not display curiosity or bravado.

DURING AN ARMED ROBBERY STAFF SHOULD STAY WHERE YOU ARE. STAFF SHOUKD NOT CHASE THE ROBBER

Leave this to the police.

Observe the direction of departure and get-away car details only if safe to do so.

CALL THE POLICE

When it is safe call the police.

Make a full report to the police

🔴 The workplace counter or work area should be wide and elevated to provide safety for employees. It should also be cleaned regularly to remove old fingerprints. This increases the chance that a robber may leave a readable print behind. Do not use oil- or wax-based cleansers.

🔴 Secure the cashier operations, including fixing any cash registers securely to the counter. Install barriers to keep unauthorised people out of these areas.

🔴All staff should have an up-to-date list of emergency contacts near the telephone.

🔴 Keep witness description forms readily available for employees and other witnesses to complete after any robbery has occurred.

🔴A silent alarm system should be installed. The system could be one that can be unobtrusively activated by a staff member who is forced to open the safe or vault. The alarm should be tested periodically and serviced to correct any malfunction. Whenever it is accidentally set off, or malfunctions, this should be immediately reported to the police so that they are aware that it has been a false alarm.

🔴All businesses should ensure that they have storage rooms with locks that can be opened from the inside: robbers sometimes lock employees in storage rooms. If you do have a room whose lock can’t be unlatched from the inside, hide its spare key in there.

🔴 For a secure area in a business use doors and gates with latches that automatically lock on closing.

ARMED ROBBERY TRAINING AND VIOLENCE PREVENTION IS ESSENTIAL FOR STAFF SAFETY
ARMED ROBBERY TRAINING AND VIOLENCE PREVENTION IS ESSENTIAL FOR STAFF SAFETY

Training Staff to prepare for a robbery and improve safety

Proper training for employees in the procedures they should follow during a robbery is vital to effectively responding to the confrontation and remaining as safe as possible.

Staff armed hold up training should be conducted regularly and discussion periods should be available so that every employee knows their role and has an opportunity to ask questions.

AGKK robbery prevention training on a regular basis will help to ensure the proper reaction of staff in the event of a robbery. The practical robbery training increases safety and well-being of staff.

AGKK robbery training teaches staff many essential safety skills

We train staff how to remain Calm

We train staff how to remain calm so it enhances safe measured responses

Staff should obey the instructions of an armed robber

In in armed hold up training we teach staff that they should not resist the robber. The money is not worth risking a life for.

Do not take action that would endanger the safety of personnel or customers.

In most armed hold up situations, robbers won’t harm a person who cooperates. Do not use or encourage the use of weapons against the robber. Introducing another weapon into the situation increases the chances of someone becoming injured during the robbery. No amount of money is worth the risk of endangering a person’s life.

Try to inform the robbers of any surprises. If someone is expected back soon, or if you must reach out or move in any way, tell the robber what to expect so that he or she will not be startled. An unexpected move by an employee may trigger a violent reaction endangering the lives of many people.

Follow the robber’s commands, but do not volunteer information or assistance. The longer the robbery takes, the more nervous the robber may become and therefore the more apt to become violent. If the robber demands a specific amount of money, give them only the amount they demand.

If the robber displays a firearm, or even just claims to have one, consider it to be loaded and able to be used. Try to alert other employees to the situation by using prearranged signals.

Description – in our armed robbery training we train staff to be observant

We educate staff to plan to be a good witness.

Try to notice as much as possible about the robber or robbers yourself, without discussion with other witnesses. Staff should make a mental notes of the following during an armed robbery:

✅ The number of robbers.

✅ Physical characteristics, including: race, sex, age, height, weight, build, facial characteristics (head shape, colour of hair, colour of eyes, shape of eyes, nose, mouth, etc.), tattoos, scars, marks and/or other distinguishing features, right-handed or left-handed, clothing worn, other peculiarities exhibited by the robber (for example, smelled of alcohol, appeared to be “high” on drugs, etc.).

✅ Robber behaviour. Speech patterns (accents, language used), nicknames, actions/interactions with other offenders, any names used by the robbers.

✅ Description of any written note they present, type and description of weapon used, method of escape, vehicles used for escape, direction of travel when escaping.

Evidence

Staff should remember to safeguard all possible evidence.

Be aware of where the offender went in the premises and what was touched. Secure it and don’t touch it yourself or let anyone else touch it.

Staff procedures for after a robbery

By following a known set of procedures after a robbery, each business employee and staff member will be in a better position to help police arrest the robber, and, more importantly, to protect all employees and innocent customers from harm.

Business Management should establish in advance which personnel will take certain actions if a robbery occurs. Decide now which employee will lock the doors, who will call the police, who will care for anyone injured, who will look for the getaway car, and who will protect the evidence. Don’t assume these jobs will just happen automatically. In our AGKK armed robbery training we train businesses and their staff what to do if a robbery occurs, employees should follow these steps:

🔴 Do not immediately chase after a robber. The robber may shoot at, or attack, any pursuers. Responding police or witnesses might even mistake you as a robber

🔴 Secure the doors so that the robbers or offenders cannot re-enter the business or premises.

🔴 Stop the business operations and place a sign on the door telling customers that the business is “Temporarily closed due to an emergency.” Do not let anyone in except emergency personnel.

🔴 Call the police immediately using the emergency calls number.

🔴 Be sure to tell them if anyone is injured, so that an ambulance can be dispatched if necessary.

🔴 Provide the police the time of the robbers’ departure, their description and their direction and method of travel. Stay on the phone until you are told that it is okay to hang up.

🔴 The speed and detail of staff reporting an armed robbery is critical to getting the offender intercepted.

🔴 Staff should care for any injured people.

🔴 If it can be safely done as the robbers leave, staff should try to note their exact method of escape as well as their direction of travel. If they use a vehicle, try to find out its make, colour, type, number-plate registration and State/Territory of registration.

🔴 Staff and all employees should try to preserve and protect any potential evidence. Protect the scene of the crime and do not touch anything the robber may have touched. Keep people out of the area.

Staff should write down a description of the robber independently of other witnesses. Witness description forms should have been made up for this purpose, but if these aren’t available use any available paper.

Staff should ask witnesses of the armed robbery to stay until police arrive.

🔴 If they insist on leaving, try and obtain their names and addresses, or at least their names and phone numbers.

🔴 Employees should contact anyone else who may need to be informed of the armed robbery examples include the owner of the premises, security firm, etc.

🔴 Emergency telephone numbers should be accessible and the notification policy clearly established and known to all staff.

🔴 Staff should not discuss the crime with outsiders, including media, until police give you permission to do so. Refer all questions to the police.

🔴 Staff should not tell anyone how much money was stolen, or give any estimate of it, unless absolutely necessary.

🔴 The owners, managers or staff should find out and record anything else that may have been stolen during the armed robbery.

🔴 If an exact amount of cash taken during a robbery is released to the media and they report a large loss, other robbers could be attracted to your business

🔴 After the armed robbery staff should Assist the investigating officers in every way possible. Cooperate with the police by being available for interview, and be willing to identify suspects and to give evidence in court when notified to do so.

ARMED ROBBERY TRAINING AND PREVENTION IS ESSENTIAL FOR THE SAFETY AND WELLBEING OF STAFF AND EMPLOYEES

Trauma of a robbery for staff

It is important to recognise that the effects of a robbery can vary greatly between staff and victims. Businesses can aid a staff member’s recovery by:

🔴 Providing or facilitating immediate medical treatment, where necessary.

🔴 Providing immediate and on-going support, including supplying the employee with information and access to specialist services (counselling services, etc ).

Handling of cash management Armed Robbery Training and Armed Hold Up Training

These key preventative armed robbery measures are important to help protect your business and staff:

🎯Make sure the business cashier is in a visible location, as far away from entry/exits as possible and that the counter is wide and high enough to restrict physical contact between staff and offenders.

Ensure good visibility from the street. An open and uncluttered business frontage – whether professional services or retail provides a clear well-lit view into the business which can deter offenders as it allows those passing by to see if a crime is being committed.

🎯If possible install a time delay operated safe with a drop chute and regularly empty your cash drawer into the safe

🎯We recommend to have a secure area for handling and counting large amounts of cash. Always keep this area secure and out of sight of the general public

🎯Encourage electronic methods of payment, such as credit cards rather than cash, to minimise cash levels.

🎯Businesses and staff should avoid using labelled bank bags

🎯If possible use professional security companies to collect cash and transport it to the bank

🎯If staff you need to transfer money to the bank, do so at irregular times and vary the route

🎯Employees should not wear their company uniform when going to the bank to deposit cash

Store layout and design

🎯Make sure your business is clearly visible from the outside

🎯We recommend designated safe areas and escape routes for you and your staff

🎯If possible install Close Circuit Television (CCTV) to monitor entry and movement within your business and have the CCTV attached to a recording device.

🎯Businesses should install an alarm system, particularly one with a duress function system alert.

🎯Staff should ensure that back and side doors and windows are kept secure. It is obvious that it is important to keep all entry and exits points locked, in particular when the business is unattended. As mentioned also consider having back doors and windows locked when the business is operating.

🎯Businesses should provide good lighting inside and outside of their building and premises

We recommend to make extensive use of security signage and stickers, both inside and outside your business to promote proactive security measures such as ‘Premises under constant video surveillance’

We train staff with improved safety strategies when a armed robbery occurs.

We teach staff how to stay calm and do exactly as the armed offender says. Employee personal safety and that of the customers is far more important than any money or stock staff and businesses might lose.

We train staff these important strategic concepts during an armed robbery or armed hold up:

  • Staff should speak only when spoken to. Talking to the offender will only prolong the incident
  • Employees should recognise and remember the offenders will be nervous and tense
  • Staff Explain in advance any sudden movements you are going to make (e.g. “I am going to open the cash register now”)
  • Employees should not activate alarm systems UNLESS it is SAFE to do so
  • Staff should avoid eye contact with the offender
  • Employees should try and remember as much as you can about the offender and how he/she behaves

Recommended procedures for staff after an armed robbery

As soon as it is safe to do so:

Call triple zero (000) and ask for the police:

  • Provide your name, telephone number and exact location of the robbery
  • Describe the offenders, any motor vehicles used and their direction of travel
  • Describe the weapon/s used
  • If necessary, provide first aid and call for medical assistance. Call triple zero (000) if you require an ambulance
  • If you have not activated the alarm system DO SO
  • If practical, close the business and try to preserve the crime scene. If possible rope off the area where the offenders have walked. Do not touch anything
  • Do not clean up the scene. Forensic evidence such as fingerprints may not be visible to the naked eye
  • If necessary, relieve affected staff of their duties and separate staff so that they can maintain an independent recollection of events
  • Ask any non-employee witnesses to remain until police arrive. If they insist on leaving, try to obtain their name and contact details. Police may want to interview them
  • The media may turn up at your business. You have a right to privacy and you are not compelled to talk to the reporters.
  • Use this armed hold up event to assess the layout of your business and the procedures staff follow. There may be changes you can implement to make the business safer for your staff and customers whilst making it more difficult for future offenders.

It is important to train staff and businesses in how to prevent an armed robbery – and what to do if employees cannot.

Armed robberies are relatively rare but are on the increase in some locations.

But they do occur. They are obviously very frightening and have a huge impact upon a workplace and staff.

As a business, you have a legal duty of care to provide a safe workplace for your staff and that also means doing the best as far as reasonably possible, to prevent a crime occurring.  All business owners want to prevent the business being targeted, increase the safety of their employees and customers, reduce the impact of a armed robbery or armed hold up crime on your business – and if does occur to be able to assist police in the arrest of offenders.

Do you provide your staff with training in armed robbery prevention and safer procedures?

They should be aware of safer management with regard to handling cash and be made aware of what to ‘watch out for’ with regard to suspicious criminal behaviour.

Staff should have easy access to relevant numbers to call if something does occur.

Armed robbery training improves the safety of staff during an armed hold up.

Armed hold ups can occur in any business and it is vital that you and your staff know how to keep safe during an armed robbery.
