✅ Understand the power of silence. A lot of us can be very uncomfortable with silence. But, communication isn’t just the words we say. The spaces between the words can be often be very important as it can help de-escalate the situation.

Workplace violence and aggression, like all psychosocial hazards at work, can be most effectively managed within a proactive and problem-solving approach where the process of developing a safe work environment is continuous. This proactive approach to the management of workplace violence is reflected in the legislative framework governing health and safety at work (see below):

Health and safety legislation places many important responsibilities on employers to protect their staff and others using their premises. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers have a legal duty to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of their employees. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 also require employers to consider the risks to employees, including protecting employees from exposure to reasonably foreseeable violence.

Employers must:

✅ Establish the significance of the risk of violence and aggression;

✅ Identify what can be done to prevent or control the risk; and

✅ Produce a clear management plan to achieve this.

✅ Provide information, instruction and training

Employers are required to provide information (e.g. emergency response procedure), instruction, training (e.g. diffusing customer aggression and conflict) and supervision to their employees so that they are not exposed to psychological risk factors that may lead to work-related stress. Refer to Section 19(1) (b) Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984.
