TESTIMONIAL

We recently had de-escalation practical, interactive training with AGKK at two of our locations. Our presenter was Bernie Haughey.

I was very impressed with Bernie’s commitment and desire to provide us with the most appropriate training for our workplace contexts.

I had several phone calls with Bernie prior to the training event, and he asked insightful questions about the nature of our work in order to determine the areas where we most needed training.

Many of our staff are required to visit clients in their homes and Bernie was able to modify the training for that context.

To further provide us with bespoke training Bernie arrived early so that he could meet our staff and talk about their experiences and where they had areas of concern.

The training itself was an ideal mix of theory and interactive practice. Everybody had a chance to practice the skills that Bernie expertly taught us. The principles were simple but highly effective.

Feedback from our staff was uniformly excellent. Best of all, our staff now feel a lot more confident about how to de-escalate a situation and thereby ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all concerned.

I whole-heartedly recommend the de-escalation interactive training with AGKK. As evidence of my recommendation, we have already booked Bernie in for refresher training at the start of 2023.”

•Use humor (sparingly) to lighten the mood (be very careful with this!)

•Motivating the student

•Empathising with the student

•Giving choices

•Setting limits

To prevent violent incidents in your school and workplace, teachers and schools need to identify the risk factors and implement effective strategies, practices, and policies. In addition, schools and teachers should have a response plan in place. This practical de-escalation training program, course and workshop on handling workplace violence covers four key elements – prevention, best practices, workplace policies, and proactive safe responses. It aims at helping teachers handle violent situations in the schools and build a safe and secure environment for all employees and students.

The de-escalation training educates teachers to rely on communication and negotiation tactics to obtain more positive outcomes.

Here are a few elements of de-escalation that are taught to teachers and schools all over Brisbane, Queensland and Australia.

Active/Empathetic listening

Active listening means listening attentively to another person or student withholding judgment, and paying close attention to what they’re saying. There are also nonverbal and verbal components to active listening that serve as signals to the other person that you are listening.

In essence, active listening means teachers and staff members paying attention to what the student or individual is saying and not thinking about what you are going to say in response.

Don’t argue or interrupt, or convince them that they’re wrong. Very often, angry people only want to feel listened to and be taken seriously.

In effective de-escalation nonverbal communication is very important including

gestures, facial expressions, body language, as well as the tone of voice and volume.

Nonverbal communication includes body language and body movement.

Are you standing in a guarded position, standing over the student?

Or do you appear more relaxed with your hands at your side?

Are you closing in aggressively on the student, or are you backing away and keeping a safe distance between you and the subject?

(Keeping a safe distance is one of the techniques they teach in de-escalation training so teachers still have time to react if a student lunges with a fist.)

Your nonverbal communication also shows that teachers are engaging in active listening because they are making eye contact, they are nodding and leaning forward a little, sitting or standing still, and teachers are letting the student speak without interrupting or rushing to fill gaps in the conversation.

DE-ESCALATION TRAINING FOR TEACHERS IS IMPORTANT TO IMPROVE SAFETY AND WELLBEING

It is often possible to minimise behaviours that may lead to physical harm or danger to self or others by early intervention — immediately before or as behaviour begins to escalate.

Ignoring escalation and not addressing its cause can increase the frequency and/or severity of the aggressive or violent behaviour.

For improved safety and wellbeing it is essential for teachers to identify the triggers that cause concerning behaviour and to recognise the early signs of escalation. This will provide an opportunity to apply de-escalation strategies that reduce, rather than heighten, an emerging aggressive or violent situation.

Some important teacher de-escalation training strategies include:

✅ Teachers and staff keeping verbal instructions simple and minimal, using a calm tone of voice.

✅ Staff using clear, direct language or the student’s preferred method of communication (a de-escalation trained teacher will focus on the behaviours they want students to display rather than the ones they do not).

✅ Teacher reinforces the desired behaviour or positive alternate behaviours when demonstrated.

✅ Teacher acknowledges the student’s underlying or expressed emotion (e.g. anger/distress/sadness).

✅ Teachers and school staff using active listening skills.

✅ Provide reflection time for the elevated student

✅ Teachers need to be aware of their body language (adopt a non-threatening stance – open, relaxed and hands down).

✅ Use Problem-solving techniques with the student to address the issue if it is safe to do so.

✅ Allow adequate personal space from student

✅ Use non-verbal cues.

✅ Teacher provides student with options (within the limits) to help the student feel they are in control of their decisions.

✅ Allow the student to access an alternative space with school staff that is less stimulating or removes access to the triggers of behaviour in order to self-regulate and problem-solve.

✅ In our training we reinforce that effective de-escalation is dependent on the individual needs of the student at the time.

Strategic, Proactive Verbal communication is essential in effective de-escalation training

Verbal communication is everything we say, but not how we say it. That is, tone of voice, volume and so on are very important in de-escalation of students or aggressive individuals.

Verbal communication during de-escalation includes paraphrasing “It must be hard to feel like no one is listening to you.” This builds trust and rapport between you and the student, allows for clarification, and forces them to listen as well.

It also means reflecting back what they seem to be feeling, such as saying, “It feels like you’re upset right now.” This shows that you are actually observing their own nonverbal communications.

Using non-threatening words and statements. Rather than telling a subject to calm down or you’ll  get them suspended from school, teachers can say things like, “I understand you’re angry. I just want to listen to you and give you some options.”

Teacher de-escalation techniques

Other teacher de-escalation techniques taught in the practical de-escalation training include:

🎯 Empathising: Meeting them where they are, not expressing any judgment about their situation.

🎯 Make a positive connection: Find something you have in common, favourite sports team, and so on.

🎯 Isolate them from others to avoid a large body of students, distract from the situation.

🎯 Motivate the student: Encourage the student for taking positive small steps.

🎯 Provide helpful choices for students, instead of threatening them with suspension or detention.

De-escalation training and restorative practices are an effective way to improve class and school culture, decrease negative behaviours, and develop successful students of the school and world. These tools help teachers implement the practices in a developmentally appropriate way for school students of all ages.

De-escalation training provides solutions for teachers and staff in the management of student Disruptive Behaviour.

Examples of teacher and school de-escalation include:

🔴 Teachers communicating clear behavioural expectations in the beginning of the term/lesson and establish control over the classroom environment.

🔴 Teachers construct a code of student behaviour as a foundational means of good pupil behaviour and enforcement. So students can understand and apply positive functional actions and respectful communication

🔴 Manage student rudeness privately and calmly.

🔴 Teachers be a positive role model for their students.

🔴 Attempt informal, non-public proactive resolutions whenever possible.

🔴 When teachers must confront behaviour publicly, separate the student from the behaviour and confront the situation, proactively firmly and calmly.

🔴 When relocating a student from the class for inappropriate aggressive behaviour follow this up with solutions after the lesson.

PRACTICAL DE-ESCALATION TRAINING & OVA TRAINING COURSES FOR TEACHING STAFF
PRACTICAL DE-ESCALATION TRAINING & OVA TRAINING COURSES FOR TEACHING STAFF

Teacher de-escalation training that provides proactive solutions

It is often possible for teachers to minimise aggressive student behaviours that may lead to physical harm or danger to self or others by taking proactive, preventative action early—immediately before or as behaviour begins to escalate. Ignoring escalation and not addressing its cause can increase the frequency and/or severity of student aggressive or violent behaviour.

Therefore, it is important for teachers to strive to identify the triggers that cause concerning behaviour and to recognise the early signs of escalation. This will provide an opportunity to apply proactive teacher de-escalation strategies that reduce, rather than heighten, an emerging conflict or aggressive student situation. In turn, this proactive approach will help to reduce future problems and aggressive or poor student behaviour incidents, while enhancing opportunities for students to learn positive social skills.

If a student is becoming agitated, but their behaviour is not placing them or others at an imminent threat of physical harm, school staff should employ targeted de-escalation tactics to prevent behaviours from further escalation and to address the cause of the escalation.

In AGKK Practical de-escalation teacher and school training here are some recognised teacher de-escalation strategies:

🎯Teachers and school staff using active listening techniques (actively listen, empathise, ask questions, paraphrase and summarise actions for moving forward)

🎯 Staff acknowledging the student’s underlying or expressed emotion (e.g. anger/distress)

🎯 Problem solving with the student to address the cause of escalation if safe to do so

🎯Teachers keeping verbal instructions simple and minimal, using a calm tone of voice and clear, direct language or student’s preferred method of communication (focusing on the behaviours teachers want them to display rather than the ones staff don’t)

🎯 Adopting a non-threatening body stance and body language (open, relaxed with hands down)

🎯 Allowing adequate personal space

🎯 Teachers using non-verbal cues

🎯 Distracting the student from the source of any anger or distress by discussing another topic they are interested in

🎯Teachers providing positive options (within limits) to help the student feel they are still in control of their decisions

🎯Going to an alternative space with the student that is less stimulating or removes access to the triggers.

The AGKK de-escalation training workshops, program and courses includes additional experienced training information and advice on de-escalation.

When attempting to de-escalate a student’s behaviour, staff members should observe whether the student’s agitation is diminishing or if the behaviour is continuing to escalate. If it appears the behaviour is escalating to the point that it is placing the student or others at an imminent threat of physical harm or danger the staff member present will need to move from a de-escalation approach to gain emergency assistance.

Occasionally a student’s behaviour may reach the point where it threatens the safety of themselves or others. This may occur following a period of escalating behaviour, when de-escalation techniques have been employed but have not been effective, or in situations where escalation has been quick and unpredictable.

In either situation, the actions of school staff should focus on protecting the safety of all students (including the student at risk of causing physical harm or danger to self or others), themselves and other staff. Intervention should be reasonable and proportionate to the situation, and have regard for the dignity of the student who is the focus of the intervention.

Prevention and De-escalation of Intense Student Behaviour Responses: What Teachers Can Do

Prevention is the most efficient intervention teachers can employ for addressing student aggressive behaviours that interfere with learning and a stable classroom environment.

The more proactive teachers and staff can be in supporting students who demonstrate behaviours that interfere with learning, the more successful they will be in helping students learn and maintain new skills to support lifelong learning.

When an unanticipated incident occurs, or when a student demonstrates an unexpected behaviour that interferes with learning, the manner in which teachers respond will influence the student’s response.

Teacher reactions to student behaviour can serve to either escalate or de-escalate the student’s behaviour. Staff and teachers are not always aware of how their own actions may rashly escalate the behaviour of a student they are trying to support, even as they do their best to ensure student safety and uphold classroom and school expectations. When teachers and staff use effective de-escalation techniques as a student’s behaviour is becoming more intense, they have a unique opportunity to prevent aggressive behavioural responses or other student behaviour that often leads to disciplinary removal, negative impact, or harm to the student or others.

In our de-escalation training we educate teach and staff to understand effective ways to de-escalate student behaviour and provide immediate solutions that aid in the school environment.

AGKK de-escalation training is a very useful practical skills guide for how teachers and staff should respond to students to assist with de-escalation, especially with students who have significant behavioural needs, to learn and develop self-monitoring and regulation skills.

🔴 Model calm actions

In our de-escalation training we train staff how to model calm through their breathing, nonverbal expression, self-talk, tone of voice, and use of calming strategies. The more upset the student becomes, the calmer the teacher and staff member needs to become. Teacher should be like water on a fire, not add fuel for an accelerant.

🔴 Avoid a power struggle with students

It is important for teachers to avoid a power struggle with students.

Power struggles increase the intensity of the student’s behaviour. A loud tone of voice and close proximity when it is not needed can be signs of a power struggle. Be careful not to set up a win-lose situation by making demands or ultimatums the student will not be able to meet in their current state of heightened emotion.

🔴 Validate a students’ feelings

We educate teachers to validate a students’ feelings. Use language that validates the student’s feelings and not the student’s behaviour. Validating a student’s feelings does not mean you validate the behaviour.

🔴 Do not tell a student to calm down

Do not tell a student not to be upset, angry, sad, etc. Telling a person not to feel whatever they are feeling can be harmful and escalate the situation.

🔴 Be Sincere

Be sincere in trying to resolve the situation through your words and actions.

🔴 Ignore challenging questions

Ignore any challenging questions from the student and focus only on working with the student toward a calm solution.

🔴 Do not use generalisations

Do not use generalisations, such as “You always get so angry when…”, “You never listen when….”

Teacher Responses that May De-escalate or Prevent Intense Behaviour

🎯 Use a calm, clear, respectful, and non-emotional tone of voice.

🎯 Stand at an angle to the student. This is less threatening than directly facing them.

🎯 Use a non-confrontational body language (arms at the side, relaxed body posture, neutral facial expression) when approaching a student who is agitated, and consider whether approaching a student or backing away is the best option.

🎯Respect the student’s personal space and avoid using physical contact with the student. For some students, what an adult perceives as a reassuring touch on the shoulder or an attempt at calm redirection may feel threatening and escalate behaviour for an individual student.

🎯 Use words, body language, and prompts that reduce tension, communicate support, and provide calm redirection.

🎯 We educate staff and teachers to engage in self-care to ensure they are addressing their own needs and avoid burnout. Teachers are only as able to support their students’ social and emotional needs as they are able to support their own needs.

OCCUPATIONAL VIOLENCE TRAINING FOR TEACHERS AND STAFF

Occupational violence injuries or near misses are generally caused by these groups:

• students

• adults i.e. parents, carers, community members

In schools the Occupational Violence Prevention Procedure (OVPP) affirms that violence toward employees should not be tolerated and a WHS model must be employed.

“Occupational violence is any action, incident or behaviour that departs from reasonable conduct in which a person is, threatened, harmed, injured by another person in the course of, or as a direct result of their work.”

Examples include:

• Physical or verbal intimidation and threatening behaviour

• Spitting, biting, hitting, kicking, punching

• Malicious damage to an individual’s property

• Gendered or racial violence

• Online/virtual harassment.

Occupational violence is a health and safety matter and mustbe addressed. It’s the law.

School members, including education leaders, MUST report occupational violence as a work health and safety matter.

RECOGNISE OCCUPATIONAL VIOLENCE & AGGRESSION IN SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITIES

✔ In our de-escalation training we train staff how to prevent occupational violence and how to use proactive aggression management strategies.

✔ We enhance staff knowledge and skills in how to recognise occupational violence and have a good range of de-escalation strategies that they can use

✔ We educate schools to communicate the expectations of behaviour with families, the student body and school community.

REPORT OCCUPATIONAL VIOLENCE & AGGRESSION

✔ We recommend to all staff, including the leadership team, are reporting all instances and near misses of occupational violence

RESPOND SAFELY TO OCCUPATIONAL VIOLENCE & AGGRESSION

✔ We convey to schools that they should check on those involved if they are okay

✔ We recommend time to debrief with the staff concerned.

There are times that the best efforts in prevention may not be effective in preventing behaviour escalating. Recognising when a student’s behaviour is escalating and responding early to address their concerns are essential in reducing the impact of the behaviour and keeping staff and students safe.

“If a student’s behaviour is escalating but is not placing themselves or others at imminent risk of physical harm, school staff should employ targeted de-escalation strategies to prevent behaviours from further escalation and to address the reasons or causes of the escalation.”

At AGKK de-escalation training we educate staff with practical tools and strategies for de-escalation.

The occupational violence training is evidence-based theory, with a lot of practical de-escalation techniques and strategies that are experienced in improving desired outcomes.

De-escalation training guidance strategies for teachers and staff

🎯 Teachers and staff should reinforce the desired behaviour or positive alternate behaviours when demonstrated. Using active listening techniques (e.g. LEAPS – Listen, Empathise, Ask questions, Paraphrase and Summarise actions for moving forward.

🎯 Teachers and staff should keep verbal instructions simple and minimal, using a calm tone of voice and clear, direct language or student’s preferred method of communication (focusing on the behaviours you want them to display rather than the ones you do not.

🎯 Teachers and staff should acknowledge the student’s underlying or expressed emotion (e.g. anger/ distress). Providing take-up time for students to process verbal prompts or requests. Problem-solving with the student to address the cause of escalation if safe to do so.

🎯In our de-escalation training we train staff to use a non-threatening body stance and body language, open and relaxed with hands down, with adequate personal space.

🎯 We teach staff to use and recognise non-verbal cues.

🎯 Teachers and staff should provide options (within limits) to help the student feel they are still in control of their decisions. Allowing the student to access an alternative space with school staff that is less stimulating or removes access to the triggers of behaviour in order to problem solve and collaboratively work through solutions.

Ideas for teachers and lecturers in how to safely respond to occupational violence and aggressive

🔴 As a professional teacher or school staff member you must maintain a calm demeanour and steady, level voice, even in the face of intense verbal disrespect or threats from the student.

🎯 Speak softly and slowly; step back and try to see the situation from the student’s perspective.

Communicate respectfully to the student.

🎯 Endeavour to appear calm even if you are upset or anxious.

🎯Do not use Avoid sarcasm, teasing or other negative comments.

De-escalation Strategies:

Students can escalate to aggressive behaviour quickly.

In our OVA training and de-escalation training we educate teachers and staff to:

🔴 Notice signs of student distress

🔴 Connect with the young person

🔴 Re-direct behaviour through providing reasonable choices/options for alternative activities

🔴 After student is calm, discussion about what happened can take place and, if necessary, negative behaviour consequences can be determined.

Some key techniques of de-escalation that lead to positive outcomes

🎯 Remain calm and use measured voice, volume and tone.

🎯 Teachers and staff monitor their own body language and ensure it is non-confrontational.

🎯 Communicate respect and a desire to help.

🎯 Acknowledge the student’s feelings, “I can see you are upset”.

🎯 Keep verbal interactions brief, calm and respectful.

🎯 Avoid power struggles, it is not about who wins the argument.

🎯 Give the student space.

🎯 Move other students and the audience away.

🎯 Allow the student to move away, if safe to do so.

🎯 Teachers should calmly provide a direction that you know the student is more likely to comply with.

🎯 School staff should allow processing time for the student when you give instructions.

🎯 If escalation occurs, move further away if possible and make the area as safe as possible.

🎯 Teachers should make sure they have an exit plan, so they can safely leave the dangerous situation if necessary.

🎯 Send for help if necessary.

De-escalation Strategies in the Classroom for Teachers and Students

At AGKK de-escalation training we provide plenty practical occupational violence prevention and aggressive management techniques that teachers can use in their classrooms to de-escalate conflicts and support your students in more positive choices when it comes to improving behaviour.

In our de-escalation training we teach staff to stay calm and using non-verbal communication, most conflicts can be prevented before they gain momentum.

These practical de-escalation strategies help teachers and staff prevent them from spiralling out of control so there will be less disrupted learning in their classrooms.

SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITIES PROTECT YOUR TEACHERS, LECTURES AND STAFF WITH DE-ESCLATION TRAINING

Managing challenging and aggressive student behaviour with practical de-escalation training that provides solutions for schools and universities.

This practical de-escalation training is designed to support teachers to meet the diverse needs of their students and limit the incidence and impact of complex, aggressive behaviours in the classroom and schools

The de-escalation training course, workshops and OVA programs provides teachers with:

✅ A theoretical understanding of the causes and triggers of complex and challenging behaviours

✅ Teacher validated classroom and whole-school strategies that focus on preventative practices

✅ Skills and knowledge to maintain safe, orderly and inclusive environments for meaningful learning.

DE-ESCALATION STRATEGIES THAT WORK SCHOOL TEACHERS AND STUDENTS

Depending on the student’s individual situation and the level of aggression the following de-escalation strategies can be used by teachers in the classroom or playground:

✅ Active Listening. Acknowledge the opinion of the student or individual and their feelings towards the situation (e.g. I understand why that would be frustrating). Communicate openly to help them see that you are going to do your best to help them. This will help you work together towards a solution instead of having conflict against each other.

✅ Stay Calm (even if you feel the tension). This will help the student feel less threatened and more likely to communicate with you. Keep your self-control and model respectful behaviour towards your student. It also helps to try and keep a friendly tone and lighten the situation with humour where appropriate.

✅ Offer Positive Choices. Instead of telling a student what to do, or trying to force them to behave in a certain way, try giving them a few different options to choose from. This will prevent the student from feeling powerless or unheard and help

redirect them towards displaying desirable classroom behaviour.

✅ Ask strategic Questions.

Teachers need to develop their strategic questioning skills.

If teachers ask a student what they can do to help them focus, they may surprise you with some practical solutions.

✅ Use a controlled equilibrium management level. Have a balanced approach when managing aggressive students, otherwise it could escalate into a much bigger problem.

Non-Threatening body language.

For effective de-escalation teachers and staff need to use non-threatening body language. Try using your proximity in the classroom to correct bad behaviour without saying a single word. Using simple hand gestures, such as tapping lightly on a desk or placing a finger to your lips can be much more effective than more aggressive approaches, like raising your voice.

Effective and Practical De-escalation training and OVA training for teachers, lecturers and school and university staff.

In our face-to-face training we train teachers and staff to manage and minimise behaviours that may lead to physical harm or danger to self or others by taking occupational violence prevention and aggression management action early.

If teachers and staff ignore escalating aggressive behaviour and do not have the skills to address its causes it will lead to an elevation and increase in the frequency and/or severity of aggressive or violent behaviour.

In all schools and universities it is important for all teachers and lecturers to strive to identify the triggers that cause concerning behaviour and to recognise the early signs of escalation. This will provide an opportunity to apply strategies that reduce, rather than heighten, an emerging situation. In turn, this approach will help to reduce aggressive or violent incidents while enhancing opportunities for students to learn self-discipline, autonomous management skills.

A main point of de-escalation training is focusing on encouraging non-violent, voluntary compliance and safe outcomes.

The goal of AGKK de-escalation training and OVA training is to de-escalate incidents using solely verbal communication rather than escalating the situation by using force to encourage compliance.

We also teach staff to safely disengage from violent actions.

Behaviour de-escalation training for school teachers, university lecturers and all staff in businesses and all organisations.

For students with a pattern of behaviour escalation, effective de-escalation techniques should be implemented.

Teachers and other staff who are likely to be in close contact with that student should be familiar with the student’s behaviour history.

Use of proactive de-escalation strategies across the school will help to make sure these strategies are effective and do not cause confusion for the student.

If a student is becoming agitated, but their behaviour is not placing them or others at an imminent threat of physical harm, school staff should employ targeted de-escalation tactics to prevent behaviours from further escalation and to address the cause of the escalation.
In our AGKK de-escalation training example strategies include:

🔴 Establish active listening techniques

Listen, empathise, ask questions, paraphrase and summarise actions for moving forward.

🔴 Teachers and staff acknowledging the student’s underlying or expressed emotion (e.g. anger/distress)

🔴 Teachers problem solving with the student to address the cause of escalation if safe to do so

🔴 Staff keeping verbal instructions simple and minimal, using a calm tone of voice and clear, direct language or student’s preferred method of communication, reinforcing focus on the behaviours you want them to display rather than negative, aggressive or violent behaviour

🔴Teachers and staff adopting a non-threatening body stance and body language (open, relaxed with hands non-threatening

🔴 Staff allowing adequate personal space

🔴 Staff should use non-verbal cues

🔴We train staff to distract the student from the source of any anger or distress by discussing another topic they are interested in

🔴 From the de-escalation training teachers develop skills in providing options (within limits) to help the student feel they are still in control of their decisions

🔴 Going to an alternative space with the student that is less stimulating or removes access to the triggers.

TEACHERS NEED TO CHECK STUDENT BEHAVIOUR BEFORE DE-ESCALATION

Before teachers de-escalate a student’s behaviour, staff members should observe whether the student’s agitation is diminishing or if the behaviour is continuing to escalate. If it appears the behaviour is escalating to the point that it is placing the student or others at an imminent threat of physical harm or danger the staff member present will need to move from a de-escalation approach to safe disengagement techniques.

Protective physical interventions for teachers, staff and students
Protective physical interventions involve physical contact that serves to block, deflect or redirect a student’s actions, or disengage from a student’s grip, but from which a student can freely move away.

A teacher can apply reasonable actions to safely protect themselves from physical violence.
Examples of protective physical interventions include:

🔴 Guiding a student’s arm away from hitting you to prevent damage

🔴 Using your arm to block a student from hitting you

🔴 Physically redirecting a student who is aggressively running towards you

🔴 Breakaway techniques to disengage from the inappropriate grip or hold of a student who is causing physical harm.

🔴 Teachers and staff please note the particular physical intervention chosen must be the least invasive way available of protecting those involved. You have a duty of care to yourself and the student.

🔴 In some cases, physical intervention may be needed as a last resort to direct a student away from the source of their distress for the safety and wellbeing of all.

Violence and aggression are extremely unpleasant and worrying for most teachers and staff.

In our face-to-face de-escalation training we want to build confidence of teachers and staff and make them feel empowered to deal with aggression and violence if the need arises.

Moreover most employers, schools, universities, businesses and organisations realise their duty of care responsibility in equipping their teachers, staff and all of their workforce with appropriate de-escalation training and OVA training.

There is a growing need for de-escalation training for teachers and staff. At AGKK de-escalation training we meet the need for de-escalation techniques that are effective and easy to understand and apply.

For decades thousands of staff and teaching professionals have attended the practical AGKK de-escalation training workshops.

NON-PHYSICAL INTERVENTION TRAINING FOR TEACHERS

DE-ESCALATION TRAINING, PROGRAMS, COURSES FOR SCHOOLS & TEACHERS

OVA TRAINING, COURSES & PROGRAMS FOR SCHOOL TEACHERS

Non-physical intervention for teachers refers to de-escalating and managing inappropriate student behaviour without physical contact.

De-escalation strategies for teachers and staff may include (but are not limited to):

🔴 Teachers and staff always check for any danger before using de-escalation techniques

🔴 Diverting away from confrontation

🔴 Teachers remaining calm and repeating simple, clear instructions

🔴 Using polite reminders of student responsibilities

🔴 Teachers remaining focused and objective

The use of clear verbal direction is always preferred to physical intervention. It is usually not appropriate to make physical contact with a student (e.g. tapping, pushing, grabbing, poking, pulling, slapping, punching) to ensure they comply with directions.

Where it is apparent that a student’s behaviour is escalating, non-physical interventions may include:

✅ Talking with the individual student (using de-escalation communication techniques to modify behaviour

✅ If required a time-out for the student

✅ Directing other students to move away from the situation

✅Sending for assistance from other staff

In AGKK practical de-escalation training we educate teachers so they understand and can effectively apply what are proactive De-escalation strategies and techniques?

Awareness and forward planning can prevent violence and manage aggression effectively.

De-escalation training refers to the process of diffusing conflicts as they begin to prevent them from getting worse or potentially violent. In regards to classroom management, there are strategies teachers can use to de-escalate conflicts in their earliest stages and stop small behavioural issues before they get out of hand. These usually involve identifying a risk and intervening as quickly as possible in a calm, proactive and controlled manner.

De-escalation Strategies for teachers in the Classroom or in the school playground

In our de-escalation training we educate teachers to stay calm and use non-verbal communication, most conflicts can be prevented before they escalate.

Depending on the situation and what stage the conflict is at, the following de-escalation strategies can be used by teachers in the classroom to do this.

Active Listening is very important in effective de-escalation.

Teachers need to listen to what the issue is and the student’s concerns. Offer reflective comments to show that you have heard what their concerns are.

Wait until the student has released their frustration and explained how they are feeling.

Active listening in de-escalation helps teachers connect with the student.”

When there are signs of anger or verbal aggression it is important to remember that:

  • teachers and staff need to stay calm
  • anger may be a sign that the student is in distress, experiencing fear or frustrated
  • it is not possible to reason or problem solve with a student who is enraged
  • effective communication skills are the key to settling, resolving and de-escalating a situation.

Teachers can use the strategies below to de-escalate a situation:

  • Listen to what the issue is and the student’s concerns.
  • Offer reflective comments to show that you have heard what their concerns are.
  • Wait until the student has communicated their frustration and explained how they are feeling.
  • Look and maintain appropriate eye contact to connect with the student or individual.
  • Make appropriate eye contact, to show you are listening and give you a non-threating posture.
  • Communicate to confirm that you are listening and have understood.
  • Express empathy to show you have understood.

Our de-escalation training educates teachers how to deal with the situation and the students concerns.

De-escalation techniques and behaviour management strategies for school teachers and staff.

We train teachers to have a planned, proactive, response for each stage of escalation.

By understanding this violence and aggression cycle it will lead to better occupational violence prevention and aggression management.

🔴 Calm: at the calm stage we are focused and pay attention. This is our baseline phase and our goal phase. We want to be calm. We want our students to be calm. We want them to return to be relaxed and engaged in learning.

🔴 Trigger: something happens to trigger a reaction in a school student. This conflict triggers the escalation.

🔴 Agitation: School students can look visibly annoyed. They are rolling their eyes, huffing and puffing, their eyes are darting around the room, their chest is pushed forward and they are calling out or swearing.

🔴 Elevated student behaviour; their conflict behaviour is increasing, it is escalating and heading for an aggressive or violent outburst.

They are beginning to lose rational thought. They are yelling and swearing. They are not sitting still wandering around the school classroom and not acting rationally.

🔴 Peak: the outburst (the aggressive or violent eruption). The Student is aggressive and could be threatening you. They might be pushing chairs and throwing things and all over the room.

🔴 De-Escalation: Using de-escalation techniques and strategies the student begins to regain rational thought. Movements and breathing start to slow. Their muscles relax and they release tension.

🔴 Recovery: re-establishing positive connection & communication. The student may question what happened. They may show remorse or apologise. Quiet time may also be a necessary response in the recovery phase as escalation and crisis level behaviours are exhausting.

“Bernie gave staff practical solutions and improved confidence, encouraging us to question and rethink how we interact with students and gave us proactive methods and strategies that we can use immediately.

The de-escalation role playing was very effective.

Bernie demonstrated the techniques and there was more than enough examples of strategies, and there was heaps of time to practice the de-escalation techniques. It was comprehensive, applying well to all teachers and school staff members, and started many collaborative conversations about how to manage aggressive students in many different areas of the school. Bernie ensured his training guidance was relevant by consulting me beforehand, being sensitive to our school context.

Bernie from AGKK de-escalation training has our highest recommendation.”
